What I’m thinking about at the end of the year
As we come to the end of the year, I've been reflecting on all that we accomplished this year. It is truly an honor to serve as Oregon's Senate President.
During the legislative session in the first half of the year, we made major progress on critical priorities like: 1) increasing housing production and support for reducing homelessness; 2) making major leaps in job creation by investing in semiconductor research and production; 3) protecting access to abortion health care and gender-affirming care.
In addition, some of the bills that will go into effect on January 1st include legislation that: boosts addiction treatment for people in custody, increases penalties on people convicted of organized retail theft, supports mental health services to first responders, helps convert commercial buildings to housing, boosting the Oregon child tax credit for low-income families, upgrading school HVAC systems, creating firefighter apprenticeship programs, and much more.
In recent weeks, I've been working with my colleagues to prepare for the 2024 session. In particular, we've been focused on the addiction crisis gripping our state. More on that to come, but I'm committed to making real progress for all Oregonians.
From our family to yours, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season.
Happy holidays and happy new year!
